Insomnia and depression

Close to one million Swedes currently suffer from insomnia, and about half a million from depression. Many experience both problems at the same time. We are conducting clinical research about Internet-based treatment of insomnia, and also about Internet-based treatment of concurrent insomnia and depression.

Please note that the Internet-based treatment/study described on this website is conducted in Swedish and only available to people registered and living in Stockholm, Sweden.

Previously it was assumed that the sleeping problems of people suffering from depression were primarily due to the depression, and that the depression must be treated first. Newer studies show that sleeping problems in themselves are a high risk factor of feeling down and of depression. There are also signs that the depression in itself gets improved through CBT for insomnia. This is why we conducting a study aimed at examining how sleeping problems are connected to depression.

Participants will be assigned by chance to one of two treatments that focus both insomnia and depression. Both treatments are based upon Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

In addition, for those who only suffer from insomnia, we will also be evaluating the effect of collecting a little more information than usual concerning how the treatment is going and how the sleep changes during treatment. All participants in this part of the study receive insomnia treatment using CBT.

The handling of the assessment and the treatment in itself are basically similar to the regular treatments of the Internet psychiatry. In the study we focus a little bit more on measuring how the participants feel and what they think, and the participation in the study is free of charge. The study is conducted in collaboration with the Karolinska Institute (KI).
